I haven't shut down Real Life Journal and I probably won't (at least anytime soon) because I just have too much material here that I don't want to lose and there still seems to be real interest in this blog, even though my last post on it was back in 2019.

But I've moved onto to different (and hopefully better things) and blog almost exclusively at The New Democrat now, but I've created this page so my viewers can see what I'm up to online, especially on social media everyday and will post those posts like my photos, videos, and comments on this page. And I hope you find it interesting. Those posts will come from my TwitterPinterestInstagram, and hopefully eventually my YouTube page.

Ed Asner is one of my favorite comedic character actors of the 1970s and I believe one of the funniest people in Hollywood in that decade. He was a great improv comedian who put everything that he had in comedy. Mary Tyler Moore just isn't as funny without him, even though they had other great comedians on it like MTM and Ted Knight, Betty White and others.

9/03-2021 - Hollywood Goddess Markie Post, is one of my favorite TV comedians. I think she was very funny in pretty much everything that she ever did, including on NBC's Chicago PD, where she played Sophia Bush's crazy, but hilarious mother.

Showbiz Cheat Sheet: "Fans of Dick Wolf’s One Chicago television shows anxiously await the return of Chicago P.D. Season 9 is coming soon and will continue to follow the 21st District of the Chicago Police Department as they battle crime throughout the famous city. Sadly, fans are currently mourning the death of Markie Post, a regular guest star of the Chicago P.D. cast. Does Post have any scenes in the new season? Here’s what we think."

The only thing that I don't like about this movie is that Shelly is only in it for about half of the movie and then her character dies in the plane crash. She was so cute and funny in this film (as usual) playing a woman whose scared to fly.

7/20/2022 - Ederik Schneider: If I had to pick two words to describe The Great Race with Tony Curtis, Jack Lemmon, and Natalie Wood, it would be crazy and unbelievable.

Movies Silently: "The Great Race is one of those looooong comedy extravaganzas that were so popular in the 1950s and 1960s. Basically, they star everyone in the world and showcase numerous exotic locales while chaos ensues. Some of them are wonderful and a lot of them are tedious. The Great Race is one of the good ones.

After the review, I’ll be covering the work of a silent veteran in the film’s crew. Set decorator George James Hopkins was only twenty-one in 1917 when he designed the costumes and sets for a little movie called Cleopatra. Yes, that Cleopatra."

9/12/2022 - Ederik Schneider: Birmingham-Memphis could've made a great Southern rivalry in the USFL, if the league didn't go out-of-business.

Skiati: "Here is a 10 minute 2nd quarter clip from ESPN including all the commercials from that era.

The "Revenge Bowl" it was called by us Memphians.  The Showboats took 54-6 beating on March 16th of that season, and the Boats were out for some revenge...but it was not meant to be.

I was at this game with my 6 yr old son.  The crowd was intense. It was a sellout and only the second one in the USFL up to that point.

1984 Week 17 - Saturday, June 16, 1984
Attendance: 50,079, TV: ESPN

MEMPHIS, TN(AP) - The Birmingham Stallions combined the pinpoint passing of Cliff Stoudt and the running of Joe Crlbbs and Leon Perry to clinch the Southern Division title with a 35-20 USFL win over the Memphis Showboats Saturday night.

A sellout crowd of 50,079 — only the second sellout in USFL history — saw the Showboats fail in a bid to gain revenge for a 54-6 shellacking at the hands of the Stallions earlier in the season. Birmingham raised its record to 14-3. Memphis fell to 7-10. Both teams have one game remaining.

The Showboats opened the scoring with less than two minutes gone in the game after Mike Thomas picked up a fumble by Perry and returned it to the Birmingham 30. Four plays later, Alan Duncan kicked a 38-yard field goal.

Birmingham then marched 78 yards in nine plays as Stoudt scored the first of his two touchdowns. The Stallions upped the score to 14-3 early in the second quarter when Crlbbs scampered nine yards for his first touchdown.

Cribbs rushed for 74 yards on 19 carries, while Perry rolled up 56 yards on 15 carries."

10/14/2022 - Ederik Schneider: Mike Clemons was the classic football hybrid. He was a kick returner, halfback, and slot receiver, all in the same player. Didn't have the size to be a full-time HB or WR, but was great enough of a weapon, that he could play both positions and do a lot of damages to defenses.

10/17/2022 - Ederik Schneider: Alex Nicol, Frank Sinatra, and Shelly and Hollywood Babydoll Shelley Winters, in Meet Danny Wilson. I say they made a helluva comedy trio. And Shelley's so cute and funny all by herself.

The New Yorker: "The movie screen only looks flat. A director’s inner space opens it up and draws a viewer into its alternate worlds. Many movies aren’t endowed with any such extra dimension of subjectivity and are perfectly enjoyable, within limits. Sometimes those limits are very broad, as when the flat screen is adorned with touches and flashes, gaudy baubles and coruscating illusions, of enticing and entrancing flair. These giddy delights often turn up on the great virtual American cinematheque, TCM. One such oddball masterpiece of flat-screen cinema, “Meet Danny Wilson”—a film-noir musical, from 1952—is playing there for the first time ever, this Friday, at 12:15 a.m. (It will also be streamable on the Watch TCM site and app, through August 31st.)"

10/20/2022 - Ederik Schneider: The Prisoner of Second Avenue for me, is one of those great dramatic comedies, that I only want to see once a year or perhaps even once every 5-10 years. Rotten Tomatoes: "Neurotic middle-aged New Yorker Mel Edison (Jack Lemmon) is fired from his advertising job, forcing his loving wife, Edna (Anne Bancroft), to become the couple's sole breadwinner. 10/27/2022 - Ederik Schneider: Perhaps I shouldn't put it this way, but when I think about Roman Gabriel, I think how good would the Los Angeles Rams in the 1970s have been, had Roman just been 5 years younger. You look at the defenses, the o-lines, the running backs, that the Rams had in the 1970s, but they were always a good, consistent QB away from getting to the Super Bowl. With a younger Roman, the Cowboys and Vikings don't dominate the NFC like they did with all those conference championships.

Ederik Schneider: "Yeah, the LA Rams got a lot right done in the 1960s on defense and to a certain extent the offense with good WR's. But Roman Gabriel is probably the last great QB that the Los Angeles Rams had. And they probably gave up on him too soon. He had good years with the Eagles."

While far from quality footage, this film is important as it provides the only surviving footage of the Atoms' two goals in the match--the only match footage otherwise available comes from a live satellite feed, and poor camera work resulted in both goals being missed; because the feed comes from the live feed, the replays were not otherwise preserved.

12/15/2022 - Ederik Schneider: Richard Conte and Hollywood Goddess Anne Bancroft, in New York Confidential. Conte plays a mobster's enforcer. Annie plays the mobster's daughter. Good film.

Peter Burnett: "In the wake of the televised Kefauver hearings which revealed the extent of organised crime in the US to a fascinated public, Broderick Crawford stepped up to camera to play a leading member  of a syndicate, in its Manhattan headquarters.  Part documentary, part gangster thriller, New York Confidential (1955) (director Russell Rouse, and staring Richard Conte, Ann Bancroft and Broderick Crawford) is played to perfection and has a strong cast.

New York Confidential almost stands alone.  We're much more used to seeing the corporate gangster these days, but in the mid 50s, at the tail end of film noir, it was a far harder pitch."

Ederik Schneider: The Dallas Cowboys playing the San Francisco 49ers, at Candlestick Park in 1985. One of the best NFL regular season games that I've ever seen. The 49ers had to win this game, just to make the NFC Playoffs.

Kim Lee: 37 years ago today. December 22, 1985. Candlestick Park. San Francisco 49ers vs Dallas Cowboys.

The 49ers who were needing a win over the rival Cowboys to make the playoffs, fell behind 13-0 early on and trailed 16-10 at the half.

San Francisco made the necessary adjustments at halftime and the defense dominated in the second half, shutting down the Dallas offense.

The 49ers offense went to work in the second half with Roger Craig and Jerry Rice each rushing for touchdowns and Dwight Clark scoring on a touchdown pass to get the win 31-16.

On the day Joe Montana would end up going 24 of 34 for 322 yards while Jerry Rice had 7 catches for 111 yards as San Francisco would finish the season at 10-6

6/11/2023 - Ederik Schneider: Great movie! I wish TCM would show it again.

Anne Bancroft Talks: “The action all takes place with Miss Bancroft and Poiter at opposite ends of the same telephone line — the slender thread. The screenplay about a woman who has taken an overdose of barbiturates, consists of a series of flashbacks leading to the moment of anxiety plus the frantic efforts of the telephone company, police, Coast Guard and other agencies to locate and save the woman.

After swallowing the sleeping pills, Miss Bancroft telephones Seattle's Crisis Clinic, which exists in reality as well as in the film. The woman the motion picture is about is real too, having been the subject of a national magazine article last year in which she was identified merely as Nell J. Thus Silliphant's story is compounded of fact as well as fiction.
[. . .]
The real Nell J., with her husband and two children, visited the company on location in Seattle. Reports Miss Bancroft: ‘I wasn't anxious to meet her because I was afraid it would affect my performance. But then again, I thought it might help. And actually I think it has. I had a conception of the character I would play. Drawing upon my experiences and imagining myself in her place, I had decided how she would probably look. When I met Nell she confirmed that basic picture.

She seemed to be very inside of herself. She spoke softly. I asked her what she was thinking about when she tried to take her life. She came up with things that were so terrible that they made my images seem totally unimportant. Then I had to dig within myself for more important images.’ Nell J., she added, now leads a pleasant, well-adjusted life. ‘I wish all true stories had such happy endings.’” - Press-Telegram, 31 Oct. 1965.

The true story of Nell J. was first published in the May 29, 1964 issue of Life magazine; “Decision to Die” by Shana Alexander then served as the basis for SLENDER THREAD.

Such middling sensitivity should be expected from ‘60s media dealing with mental health concerns. But as this article reveals, Anne’s characterization pulled from something universal in the human condition: desperation.

2/5/2023 - A couple posts back, I wrote about a feature story on Anne by Jack Ryan, published just a little over a week ahead of the 1963 Academy Awards. Five years later and to the day (March 31), Ryan sat down with Anne in her Greenwich Village brownstone as she was once again nominated for Best Actress, her performance in THE GRADUATE hot on the lips of many a film critic of the day. From this interview — warmly titled “Anne Bancroft: Happiness Is More Than ‘Oscars’” (compare this to the 1963 title “Anne Bancroft: She Won the Biggest Prize”) — you’ll find Anne a transformed, assured woman of a tempered but still-present ambition. From The Times Herald:

“Five years ago, Anne Bancroft was an edgy, temperamental actress, rehearing for the grueling role of Mother Courage on Broadway after six uninterrupted years of physically and emotionally demanding parts on stage and screen. Then she sat in a shabby dressing-room, stiff as her wooden kitchen chair and snapping impatient answers.
[. . .]
‘Yes, I probably told you a husband would have to accept me as a totally involved actress. That's how I felt then. I had already met Mel then and wanted to be married, but he wouldn't accept those terms. I set about to talk him out of it. We knew each other three years before we married (in 1964)—and, like so many problems, we found that they really didn't exist except in our minds. I don't know why—maybe my thirtyish 'maturity' solved it. I simply found myself working only when the role was exactly what I wanted, with time and emotion left for other things in life. Oh, I still get deeply involved in the roles I take. Mel gets totally involved when he's writing, too, and I am shut out, alone. But life is not all work now.’
[. . .]
‘In 1967 I didn't expect to work at all, but Mike Nichols telephoned about THE GRADUATE. I read the script and knew I had to get back to work. Mrs. Robinson (an affluent matron who seduces a young college boy) was something I never did before. Everybody sees me as a saintly Mother Cabrini type. Later I did the revival of The Little Foxes. That was all. As for 1968, well, maybe this is the year I don't work at all.’”

Ederik Schneider: I think Mark Aguirre was great at scoring a lot of point and getting the ball to the open man, when he was double teamed. But unlike Larry Bird, he couldn't stop anybody, at least not any great offensive players.

Lamar Matic: "Larry Bird's Celtics go up against the high-scoring Dallas Mavericks team, which could be the second best in Mavs history behind the 2010-11 one. Rolando Blackman, Derek Harper and Roy Tarpley all have decent performances, but Mark Aguirre just lights up the C's. Aguirre has a great 3rd quarter by scoring 17 points and getting the Mavericks a solid lead for the last quarter, however Larry Legend saves his best for the last minutes and clinches the game with a game winning three pointer. [Bullets Coach - Gene Shue] "Even the fight was something. They were really going at it". The fight matched Washington brawler Jeff Ruland against Scott Hastings. They were thrown out on a double-technical foul for fighting with 10:24 to play.

The incident broke out as Gus Williams attempted a successful three-point shot from the corner.
